Requirements and Application

With the exception of the doula placement, each apprentice must be either enrolled in a MEAC-accredited midwifery school, or complete the PEP process plus a coursework program*.  Students have a better experience when they have completed a good portion of their academic coursework.  (Note:  For students enrolled in our Canadian program, requirements may differ click here for more info).

*PEP applicants who are not currently enrolled in a coursework program but feel they have the equivalent knowledge and life experience/background (for example a nurse who has worked in labor and delivery or postpartum unit) and adequate out-of-hospital birth experience, are encouraged to contact us. We will consider these students on a case-by-case basis.

** TB test is required, however if a student is unable to obtain this, we may accept documentation of a chest x-ray.

Each apprentice will be placed on a two-week trial period. If you aren’t able to adjust to the practices of Birthing Your Way, or your skill levels are insufficient for the level applied for, we will adjust the agreements accordingly.  If we feel that your skill level wasn’t appropriate for the level you applied for, we will let you know of the gaps in training that we saw, and re-evaluate your level. If you choose not  to stay in the program with the adjustment in level or position you may discontinue the placement, however any unused downpayment will not be refunded. We will do our best to put you at the level you desire, but in the end an in-person evaluation will be the determining factor.
